The Kvetchit :
A Hanukkah Tale

(Book and Cassette)

By Larry Butchins
I am a children's librarian and I love using the story around Chanukah time. I read it to a group of children, and then play the cassette tape so they can listen to all the kvetches (complaints). Then I invite the children and their parents up and ask them to recite their favorite kvetch into the tape recorder. At the end of the program, I play back all the complaints and everyone loves listening to themselves!

Hanukkah:
Festival of Lights

By Jeff O'Hare and Arthur Friedman
The probably record-winning subtitle tells it all--this softcover will be worn out in no time if an appreciative family uses all of its enticing pages to celebrate the holiday. The author disarms us on the very first page by explaining how someone "with a name like O'Hare could write a book about Hanukkah" and shares that his Catholic father converted to Judaism before marrying his Jewish mother and then was "so anxious to learn all the customs and traditions...that extra emphasis was placed on doing everything right." So he's entitled to pass all this on, and more. These brightly colored pages are filled with games, crafts, stories, maps, recipes, songs with music, mazes, puzzles, gifts to make and a light-hearted spirit that fits in perfectly with that ever-present symbol, the candles of Hanukkah. It even includes a 20-year calendar so you'll always know when your favorite holiday is coming. The only things I didn't care for were the unsmiling father in the full-page illustration of an otherwise-happy family lighting its menorah, and the prominently displayed challah on the same page. Challah for Hanukkah? Bring on those half-hidden latkes Mom is carrying instead and the picture will sparkle!

Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights
(A Window Storybook)

By Berthe Amoss
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, celebrates the victory of the Jews in their battle for religious freedom in ancient Israel. The window story book is a Chagall-like depiction of the former Warburg mansion, home of The Jewish Museum, with a fiddler on the roof. Open the eight numbered windows in sequence on the mansion to reveal the wondrous story of the Maccabee heroes. The Jewish Museum, founded in 1904, is the largest museum devoted to the study of Jewish culture in the Western Hemisphere, and its collection is one of the three finest in the world. Since 1947 The Jewish Museum has been housed in the landmark Warburg mansion on Fifth Avenue in New York City. The window story was co-produced by The Jewish Museum and More Than A Card, Inc. under the auspices of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. It measures 11 x 15 and has an easel back. It comes in a resealable poly bag.

Like a Maccabee

Like a Maccabee

By Raymond A. Zwerin
The authors use a puppet-show format to retell the story of the Macabbees and their revolt against religious oppression. They also describe the qualities that made the Macabbees special, such as determination, helping to fix what was broken, courage, and thankfulness to G-d, and ask the readers if they have those qualities too.
